English Cricket - the Rules

Cricket: A Beginner’s Guide

Cricket is a famous team sport played mostly in England, Pakistan,India, Australia, West Endies  and other countries. It involves two teams of 11 players each, who take turns to bat and bowl (throw the ball).

  1. The Basic Goal
  • The batting team tries to score runs (points) by hitting the ball and running between the wickets.
  • The bowling team tries to get the batters out to limit their score.
  • After both teams have had a turn in batting, the team with the most runs wins!
  1. The Field & Pitch
  • The game takes place on a large oval field, but the action happens in the middle on a special strip called the pitch.
  • At each end of the pitch, there are three wooden stumps (called "wickets").
  1. The Two Batters
  • Cricket always has two batters on the field at the same time.
  • The active batter faces the bowler and tries to hit the ball.
  • The standby batter waits at the other end of the pitch.
  • If the batters decide to run after hitting the ball, they switch places.
  1. How to Score Runs

Batters score runs by running between the wickets after hitting the ball.

  • The batters switch places once, is 1 run, switch places twice is 2 runs and so on.
  • 4 runs: If the ball reaches the boundary after touching the ground.
  • 6 runs: If the ball goes over the boundary in the air.
  1. How to Get Out

The batter can be dismissed in different ways:

  • Bowled: The ball hits the stumps.
  • Caught: A fielder catches the ball before it touches the ground after it has been hit by the batter.
  • Run Out: If the batter does not reach the crease before the fielders hit the stumps with the ball.
  • LBW (Leg Before Wicket): If the ball hits the batter’s leg in front of the stumps.
  1. Overs & Innings
  • A bowler delivers 6 balls per over.
  • After 10 overs, the teams switch roles (batting team will become bowling team  and bowling team will become batting team).
  • The game can have one or two innings depending on the format.

Cricket has many tactics and strategies, making it a unique and exciting game!   However the rules above a great simplification of the true game.

  1. So Werden Runs Erzielt

  1. Overs & Innings
  • Ein Werfer wirft 6 Bälle pro Over.

ffffffffFFf

Flashback to Spain, 13 July 2015

A 9 litre bottle of wine has arrived by DHL from France, via London. The evening is hot and the wine has been chilling in the bottom of the swimming pool. 25 sweating Brits, desperate for a drink, are watching a piece of theatre! The Germans, in technical mode, decant an over-large bottle of wine with a garden hose! Ruth talks about the wine being strong and full-bodied like Bubu. And then the deciding moment... Ras declares the wine ready to drink.......

Episode 2:  Drinking Italian wine in Germany

Many of you will remember that in July 2015 you made an investment to purchase some wine to be drunk at the next birthday in 2025.

Well under the expert guidance of Ruth (remember the opening of the Salamanzar (9 litre bottle), Juergen, Zwonko, Claudia, myself and Ruth made off to Tuscany with the bounty.

We flew to Florence in March 2018 (the 2015 harvest was just released from the cellars) and travelled through the Tuscan vineyards borderd with Italian Cypresses, past Volpaiai and Sienna.

We visited some of the best vineyards in Chianti and eventually in Montalcino. Montalcino is a picturesque hilltop town situated in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, and is known for producing some of the finest wines in the world. We ended up visiting one of Ruths top wine suppliers, Talenti.

The vineyards of Talenti have a unique combination of altitude, exposure, and soil composition. This diversity allows them to craft red wines of remarkable depth and complexity. The predominant grape is the Sangiovese.

My notes say the Rosso di Montalcino tasted smooth with notes of summer and autumn fruits, the tase in the mouth lingered for a while. A couple of cases have now been quietly maturing in Ruth & Juergens cellar.

The proof of the wine is in the drinking, and in November last year we raided the cellar to check on the wine, having opened a bottle, it did not disappoint.

I look forward to sharing the rest of the bounty with you in July.
